Second Steps: Connecting Your Hosting to Your Domain and Installing WordPress

If you missed my article on purchasing your domain and getting your hosting, refer back to it here.

By now, I hope you have decided on a niche, purchased your domain, and grabbed your hosting.  It covers how to get your domain and hosting for your site.

Here is what you will be doing as you follow through this article:

– Connecting your Hosting and Domain

– Installing WordPress

– Setting up your custom Email

The “>” symbol refers to clicks and separates steps…

Connecting HostGator to your URL:

Log into GoDaddy

Domains > Manage > (Click on the Setting Gear Icon) Manage DNS > Click on “Change” Nameservers

You should have received an email from HostGator titled “Your Account Info”.  Refer back to that email.  If you have not set up your hosting yet, do so now.  Click here for HostGator

You will then copy and paste the 1st and 2nd nameservers from HostGator into the two nameserver sections, and then save.

This may take a few moments to update but you now have successfully linked your GoDaddy domain with your hosting server.

Installing WordPress:

WordPress is a software that allows us to build a website very easily.  We will use a plugin to sync with our Opt-In page so that it is visible on our domain.

Log into HostGator Control Panel.  (Refer back to  the “Your Account Info” email from HostGator for the link, your username, and password)

Once inside the control panel:  Click on “WordPress – 1 Click Installation” > Select Domain (Leave “directory” section blank) > Next

Fill out relevant sections and click “Install Now”.  Once the installation is complete, save down your Installation Details (Username and Password).

(Again, these changes may take a bit to update so do not worry if the site link does not work right away)

Custom Email:

Now we want to create a custom email address that matches our domain and optimizes it for deliverability.

Go to your HostGator CPanel – again, you can find this in the email from HostGator titled “Your Account Info”

Once inside the control panel:  Under Email options, click on “Authentication”.  On the next page, make sure that DKIM and SPF are Enabled. (These help you avoid being seen as a spam email account)

Back in the Email options, click on “Forwarders” > Add Forwarder (Not Domain Forwarder) > enter first name (this will set the address as yourfirstname@yourdomain.com) > enter address that you want to forward to (ignore pop up) >  Add Forwarder

Now you have the ability to send emails from your custom domain, and all replies to your custom domain will be forwarded to your selected email address.

To recap:  You now have connected your domain with your HostGator nameservers, installed wordpress on your domain, and optimized your email for your custom domain.

Keep an eye out for the Third Steps Article, where we will go over setting up your custom landing page and publishing it to your domain.  After that, anyone who searches your domain will now see the Opt-In page that you designed!

First Steps to Setting Up Your Marketing Funnel: Domain Name and Hosting

The first crucial step with online marketing is to have the basic understanding of the marketing funnel…  Refer back to my marketing funnel overview here.

Our marketing funnel allows us to gain leads through an opt-in form, usually by providing their email address (More to follow on this).  Once we have someone’s email address, we can follow up with them to provide valuable content and offer them relevant products that will allow us to make commissions.

Once you decide on a niche or a certain product that you want to promote, you can tailor your opt-in page page to suit that niche/offer.

– You will first want to purchase a domain for your site (I recommend GoDaddy, they have excellent customer service if you ever need anything).  You can also purchase your domain right through HostGator, see below.

– The second step to getting your funnel up and running is to get hosting for your site.  Providers such as HostGator “host” your domain on a server so that your site can become live and view-able on the internet.  For now, you only need the basic plan which is extremely cheap.

Until next time, sit down and think about about what type of products you want to promote.  As an example if you are into fitness, a fitness/strength training/ weight loss offer may be good for you since you have background knowledge.  You will also want to think of a domain name that is congruent with what you will be promoting.

Once you purchase your domain and hosting, we will be able to walk through the steps to get your website up and running.
